“Organic”defines foods produced by methods with no synthetic inputs such as pesticides, chemical fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, irradiation, industrial solvents or chemical food additives. Organic production in the U.S. is managed in accordance with the Organic Foods Production Act (OFPA) of 1990. For labeling, federal legislation defines three levels of organic foods with more than one ingredient—100%, 95%, and 70%. Varying rules apply on the use of the organic seals of the USDA and certifying agencies.
